The music of Abbas Premjee spans many genres and influences. He has played with rock bands, jazz bands and given solo classical guitar concerts. After completing degrees in composition and classical guitar, Abbas returned to his native Pakistan and began the study of Indian and Pakistani classical music. He learned to play the Indian slide guitar (Mohan Veena) and took instruction under the legendary sitar virtuoso, Ustad Rais Khan. He found here, a world of musical expression and emotion far richer than what he had previously known and this had a remarkable effect on his music.
Abbas moved back to the United States in 2009. Although a specialist in world music, Abbas has been steadily gaining recognition as a composer and his music has been featured in Ads and TV/radio shows across the world. His music has also been placed in the collections of several music libraries and publishers in both New York and LA.
As an artist, Abbas has been working with Latin percussionist and drummer Paul Perez, trying to bring together like-minded musicians who have an interest in spontaneous improvisation and eclectic music. Abbas gigs at various places in LA and Orange County playing both classical/jazz Guitar and World fusion on the Mohan Veena. For details, please contact.
Abbas is also active as a teacher on both guitar and Mohan veena. He teaches classes in theory and performance in both Eastern and Western styles and frequently conducts workshops and classes from his home and on skype.
“I love music in all it’s forms. The fulfillment of creation, the joy of sharing feelings in ways that defy words. These things make us human, and alive…. and when you do these things for a living, you feel blessed. I truly believe that music can be a source of great magic and healing.”
